Three road questions come up before many Costa Blanca trips: Will this route have a toll? Can I drive into central Alicante? Where are the speed cameras? The answers depend on the exact route, city street and date. This guide shows where to check each one before you set off.

Is the AP-7 toll-free near Alicante?

Partly. The AP-7 name covers several sections with different rules. According to the Spanish Ministry of Transport’s 2026 toll update, the Alicante ring road (AP-7 Circunvalación de Alicante) became free to use after a government decision of 9 December 2025. The AP-7 Alicante–Cartagena section, the motorway towards Murcia, is still a toll road, and its 2026 tariffs were updated in the same release. The amount depends on where you enter and leave and on the vehicle category.

Before a journey, compare the proposed route with a toll-avoiding alternative. Check the current toll for your specific entrances and exits using the road operator’s or ministry’s current tariff information. A route app’s “avoid tolls” setting is useful for comparison, but check the signs as you approach a junction.

Practical example: If a route planner proposes an AP-7 leg on the way between Alicante and the southern Costa Blanca, inspect that leg separately. A free ring road around Alicante does not make the motorway south towards Cartagena free, and a quoted toll for the whole motorway is not the price of your short trip.

What does Alicante’s low-emission zone mean for a visitor?

A low-emission zone is called a Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE) in Spanish. Alicante has an approved ZBE ordinance. According to the city council’s FAQ, last updated 27 July 2026, the wider zone does not impose automatic access restrictions by emissions sticker in its current phase. The old town, or Casco Antiguo, keeps its own restricted access for residents and authorised vehicles.

That distinction matters when a map sends you through the centre. A vehicle that may circulate in the wider ZBE is not automatically allowed into a restricted old-town street. Before driving to a hotel, apartment or car park in the old town, ask the destination whether vehicle access is permitted and how it is arranged. Follow the signs at the entrance even if your navigation app suggests driving through.

Municipal rules can change. Recheck the city FAQ shortly before your visit, especially if you are using a vehicle without a Spanish emissions sticker.

How do speed cameras work here?

Spain uses fixed cameras and cameras covering an entire road section. A section camera calculates average speed between two points; slowing only when you see the second camera will not correct a high average over the section. The DGT explains how section cameras work and publishes official equipment and monitored-section information.

Camera lists help with route planning, but the legal speed limit is the one indicated by the signs and applicable road rules. Limits can change around junctions, roadworks or urban streets. Leave time for the journey and pay attention to the posted limit rather than relying on a map’s stored number.

Three checks before you drive

  1. Route: Does your exact route include a tolled section? What is its current tariff for your journey?
  2. Destination: Does your address fall within a restricted old-town street? If so, who can authorise access?
  3. Road conditions: What do today’s signs, DGT traffic information and camera maps show?

For a relaxed day out, save the destination car park before leaving and keep an alternative route handy. If you are hiring a car, ask the rental company for the vehicle details you need to check any city access rule.
